Darn, little ears. I will be back, Nicole!
Here is a question for now…What was your favorite thing about the 80′s?
First Off i havent read you book yet. I plan too. I was in Barnes and noble and saw it… I loved the cover thats what caught my eye. It’s very different. What inspired the cover art?
Are you a fan of this genre of books?
thanks
Jamie
Hi Nicole! My question is: Is it true you based the character of Ryu on Mark Henry?
I RSVPed.
You know the question, what 3 things would you have with you if you were stranded on a deserted island? Well that’s not my question.
My question is how did you get stranded on a deserted island in the first place?
Okay and a more serious question, where did you come up with the names for your characters?
I posted a the link on Facebook and I’m friends with Nicole on Facebook also. http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/profile.php?ref=profile&id=527822323

Hi guys! Awesome to be here!
I just wanted to let ya’ll know that the FABULOUS Dakota Cassidy also donated an ARC of ACCIDENTALLY DEMONIC! So the pot is even spicier! Like Dakota!
Van P: The idea for my book came with a bunch of kernel ideas. I knew I wanted a character like Jane: someone who was “normal” and who would really have to adjust to the world around her, rather than being a warrior who falls in with other warriors. Then I had the idea to riff on Jung’s ideas of archetypes. What if he was wrong, and we actually had all of these myths and legends because the creatures were real? It all fell in from there. Selkie was an obvious choice for a character who was “normal” AND “magical” (nobody accepts seals to be bad ass), etc.
And my fave book of this year was Gail Carriger’s Soulless. I think it’s SO FUN! But I read all the time and I have all sorts of writers I love. I LOVE Charlaine Harris, Gena Showalter, and Anya Bast, and Katie MacAlister and I’ve picked up their most recent works. But I love all sorts!
Jon-Anne: Probably Charlaine Harris as I got the inspiration to write my book after reading one of her Sookie Stackhouse books. I’d always loved UF but could never imagine writing a “kick butt” heroine. Seeing how she write a character such as Sookie really opened my eyes. And they’re such great books!
I just wanted to come say HEY Nicole and show my support even though this is a US only contest (how rude).
But I’ll ask you a question anyways, Did you take photos of Dakota’s dogs? muahaha!
Hi Nicole,
Thanks for being here with us today. I am definitely intriqued with your novel, and I can’t wait to get my hands on it. The reviews I’ve read are great, very interesting.
Question: Did you always want to be a writer, Is it a dream come true?
Question: If you had one chance to do anything you want, be anything you want, or go anywhere you want, what would you do?
I’m wishing you much success on your release and I will be looking for you on the bookshelves.

Hey girl!! Proud of you!! Can’t wait to get my book. Headed into town to pick it up before class.
Elie N: Best thing about the 80s? 21 Jump Street! OMG! Johnny Depp AND Richard Grieco!
Jamie: The artist is Sharon Tancredi, and she has a very distinctive style. http://www.sharontancredi.com. I think she’s very inspired by contemporary artists such as Mark Ryder, Tara McPherson, etc. And the actual scene is Jane coming up out of the water she swims in every day. It’s very symbolic, and once you’ve read the book you’ll see why.
And thank you, I love it, too! It’s been controversial, but I adore it and think it’s the perfect cover for the book.
Jaye Wells: I couldn’t make Ryu AS sexually arousing as Mark Henry, but I did my best!
Amber: Oh God. On a desert island, I’d want booze, books, and something in which to fry the fish I caught.
As for names, some were inspired by the national origin of the myth, some (like Chester the ifrit) were chosen to be inappropriate, and some were chosen based on the character. So, Anyan is a barghest, which is really a germanic myth. But I chose a celtic name which means Anvil because I thought it was too perfect.
Love the questions, guys!
Natasha: Sorry, lady! I just work here.
And I didn’t take photos . . . but they’re AMAZING. And they’re all stars of Dakota’s fabulous book, Kiss and Hell! You can see them in all their wonky glory, in that book!
Thanks so much, Barbara! And I’ll see you at dance.

Hi Nicole- great contest! My question is about the cover art- it’s very different from others of the genre, I think. Was that deliberate to make it stand out, or did someone (publisher, you) just like it?

Nicole I just bought your book. I’m very much looking forward to reading it. I love the cover! I usually ask this, but since I’m a designer it is always foremost on my mind. So who did your cover and how much say in it did you have???

Hi Ashley! And I have about 1,000 guilty pleasures. Seriously. I am not known for either my asceticism or my willpower.
Bethany: Hi! We don’t have any say over our covers, as authors. But I was thrilled when Orbit chose Ms. Tancredi to do my artwork. I went to her website, http://www.sharontancredi.com, and I was absolutely wowwed! I knew she’d do a great job, no matter what, and she did. The cover art IS very different, and I definitely think Orbit wanted different. But I love it! Thanks for the question!
I’m soooooooo stoked for you, doll! EVERYONE–go buy this book! It rawks!
Oh, and niiiiiiice fake on the cold, Nic. S’rsly, don’t all boozers have colds that need whiskey? LOLLOL
Hugs,
DC
I got to meet Nicole this year at DragonCon and she is a wonderful person as well as a great writer. I loved her book Tempest Rising. Hope everyone has a great Monday. Even on my only day off I have tons of work to due!
last time promise….ordered the book on amazon!
I’ll be honest when I first saw this book on the internet I wasn’t that interested. Now, I’m seeing it every where and so many reviewers are raving. The power of the internet! I’ll definitely be getting my hands on this book.
I like a little romance in my books. Is there a romance/love interest?

Cyd: God only knows what those bastards have in store for me at Romantic Times! That’s where they waylaid Jaye with the gun bra! *shudders*
Rachel: We don’t get a lot of say, but I didn’t need to say anything through my whole cover process. I was too busy saying, “OMG IT’S PERFECT!” LOL I know it’s controversial, and some people hate it, but I adore it! Thanks!
Dakota: Who are you and what is this talk of faking colds? *sips from her flask* IT’S MEDICINAL!
Hey girl!!!
I will be here all day on and off to do the ridiculing !!
But it’s cuzi loves you!!
What kind of faeries don’t you like??
Hehe
Hi Nicole!!! I’m so glad you made it.
My browser at work blocks the videos, but I hope the exercise ball makes a cameo.
I am halfway through Tempest Rising, and totally loving it. I would have finished it this weekend, but with guests visiting, I needed to be a good hostess. Can you say pomigraniate martinis? Anyway, my question is how did you come up with the little heart/fang symbol that starts every chapter?
I also wanted to say thanks for bringing to everyone’s attention the high crime rate in Cabot Cove. Seriously, it has to be worse than Detroit & NYC combined. Although, if I am ever falsely accused of murder, I am getting Jessica Fletcher on speed dial to find that obscure rose petal or newspaper shread that clears my name.
Nicole, I enjoyed the book! Tickled my funny bone in places and tugged at my heartstrings in others.
Here’s my question: You seem fairly normal…however did you get yourself tangled up with The League of Reluctant Adults?
Hey Leaguers, you know I tease because I love.
I RSVP’ed, friended Nicole on Facebook, and follow her on Twitter (The wordplay between Jaye, Dakota, Mark, and Nicole is priceless!).
Hi Nicole,
Congratulations on your successes!
As a new author, I wanted to ask what advice you would give on improving writing style. Did you attend a lot of writer’s groups or have a mentor? Did you feel the need to obtain criticism before submitting your manuscript to an agent or editor?
Thanks – Tod
I know I’m rushing things when I spell due instead of do. Darn internet phones. I can’t play the vblogs on my phone though, have to wait until I’m home.
Thanks Rocky! I’ve fooled you all!!!! *cackles*
Tina: There’s definitely some romance and a lot of the sex.
But it’s not a romance, per se. Jane has a lot of stuff to deal with before she can be swept off her feet (or flippers) by Mr. Right.
But she’s a very sexual person and that’s part of her development/story for sure!
Jennifer: Oh dear god . . . I could never answer that one. You’ve stumped me! I have so many favorites! *stumped*
Synde: AWESOME! And there’s one kind of faerie I love. . . . *bawdy wink* You know what it is, girl.
Heather C: LOL HA! I knew it was you! I’m calling Andy! And I didn’t come up with that symbol. I only wish I were that creative! That was done by my amazing cover artist, Sharon Tancredi. http://www.sharontancredi.com
Debi: I have no idea. I thought it was the League of CONSTRUCTIVE Adults. Dear god was I wrong. . .
And I’m so glad you enjoyed the book!
Hi Tod: I actually came to fiction the roundabout way, through doing my phd. So I learned a lot about writing the old fashioned way: writing everything BUT fiction.
But that taught me a) to see style AS a tool you need to develop (practice) and b) that it’s all about getting criticism! I have a number of VERY VICIOUS readers who critique the hell out of my work. You definitely need good people you can trust tearing you to shreds to make it in this business!
And yes, you do have to have your manuscripts in as perfect a condition as you can get them before submitting. Good luck!
2. Many authors have soundtracks that they put together for their novels. Do you have one for TR? Or theme songs for any of your characters? BTW, I loved your comment about Mark Henry being too sexy. Mostly because it is the truth. hee hee hee
3. Shared on FB: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?ref=profile&id=1275523910
5 & 7: done. =)
Hi Nicole!
Tell us the truth now…how many hot, young minions do you have lurking around, bringing you cocktails?
haha I know a secret about these videos…
Hi Nicole
Several months ago you mentioned that a chapter had to be cut from the book and it
Hey Nicole!
You know how much I love your book! I am technically not “online” today but for you I had to jump on and say “Hi, from your Fangirl!”
Anyone who hasn’t yet bought Tempest Rising – Do it now! You will not be disappointed!
So will you release the first chapter of Tracking the Tempest? Huh? Huh?
Mindy: There IS a soundtrack for TR and you can find it here! http://www.nicolepeeler.com/the-jane-true-series/tempest-rising/ Yay!
And yes. Those comments ARE true. He’s too sexy for this contest, actually!
Terri: Only like a baker’s dozen.
Sascha: Shhhhhh . . . *LOL* Or I’ll talk about just HOW EARLY you go to bed at conventions. LOL
Cara: Oooo good question. And that was from Book 2. But it’s back in! I got it back in! *happy dance* It’s a total throw away chapter, but I ADORE IT. LOL Thanks for remembering, great question!

Hi Nicole!!
Loved your book as you already know. I guess my favorite parts always involved Jane’s internal dialog, I see so much of you in those thoughts
Jane is definitely a foodie and I think I drooled more when she described the bacon grilled cheese sandwich than I did for the *ahem* adult parts of the book. How much of Jane’s appetite is Nicole Peeler’s appetite? Any previews of special meals Jane will be eating in the next book?
I am definitely friends with Nicole
I RSVP’d and I entered the kindle contest

Sascha: No, honey, you WANT to beat me. There’s a difference. LOL And I’ll totally vlog for you, darling. Not least because that’s the most innocuous thing you’ve asked me to do with a video camera, ever. LOL
Heather C: Fo’ Shizzle! Just have to find the place and the time. *ugh* As for Grizzie, I wanted the most extreme thing EVER for Griz. Plus she helps represent Jane’s own sexual open-mindedness. And thank you! Yay for lesbians!
Raelena: Three are bought, but I’ve got six planned!
Zombie Joe: I will do terrible things for a cupcake, OR for a Reese’s anything. So if I found a cupcake that included Reese’s of any sort? OMG I can’t even begin to imagine. Hijinks! Hijinks!
Qwill: Hey lady! And I don’t think Ryu would ever ask me out. He’s not really my type. LOL But I WOULD let him take me to the restaurant he takes Jane to, in Tracking the Tempest. It’s fancy! Very fancy! And my friend Matt actually came up with Ryu’s name. He was the hardest for me to name. Everyone in the series had a name, but for Ryu, then my friend, Matt Harsh, suggested I name him Ryu while we were driving home from the Lake District. That said, I don’t think I pronounce it correctly . . . Ooops! Oh well. I wrote it . . . I can misspell stuff. LOL
Debi: I JUST found out and it made me VERY Excited!!! YAY! And thanks for sharing!
Miss Eliza: Absolutely! It’s so hard when people are either very picky OR very fast readers. So why not let them buy what they want! OR you can encourage them to do one of those listie things on Amazon. Wish lists? That way you get to choose something AND they get what they want.
Zita: Oooo, nice question. My ideal office window was the one I had when I wrote Tempest Rising. Well, half of it, at least. One half, admittedly, looked onto other people’s apartments. But from one quarter I could see the Firth of Forth (I was living in Edinburgh at the time) and from the other quarter I could see Arthur’s Seat. It was amazing!
Raonaid Luckwell: Oooo another good one. I have four on my list: Mercedes Lackey and Charles DeLint, who are my gods, Charlaine Harris because I couldn’t love her more, and Philip Roth because he makes me laugh so hard I pee a little. I only wish I were kidding.
Sophie: Very good question, again! I think the above people, from Raonaid’s question, plus Tom Kichin, Rick Stein, and Ina Garten (the chefs). Who else? Ummmm . . . Queen Latifah for sure (I love her!) and David Sedaris. There are definitely more, but that’s a good list.
Hi Rachel! Jane’s appetite is definitely my appetite. That, and making her an English major, are TOTAL acts of self-indulgence on my part. I could talk about food till . . .well, till I was driven to slather something in cheese and eat the hell out of it.
So yes, everything Jane eats in that book are really my favorite things.
Sophie: For YOUR fantasy dinner, I’ll invite some of my favorite bands: The Killers, Ida Maria, Florence + the Machine, the Editors, the Dropkick Murphys, and the Gaslight Anthem.
Nicole,
Congratulations on your book. I can’t view the videos as I’m at work.

Where is your favorite place to purchase fascinators? It seems that they are more popular on the other side of the pond that here. Did you first discover them overseas?
Just checking back in. Hope your fingers aren’t bleeding yet from all the typing. Wait you tweet so your fingers are use to this much typing.
I totally just took a nap with my contacts in. So I will respond to your questions after I’ve peeled my eyelids up off my seeing devices. Good lord. . . I’m like a cat today.
Thanks Andrea!
Justin: Ustream? Dude, catch it! LOL Sorry, couldn’t help it. And I’ve gotta say that’s a no. Sorry!
Carmen: Boring? Never! I don’t believe it! And thanks.
Thanks, Patsy! They’re getting good feedback, which makes me very happy. Hope you enjoy it!
Oh, that Jeanne!!! I love YOU! And your magnets. They’re such cools magnets! See you soon, lady! I’m coming to Denver next semester.
Hi Deana: Like everything out there, my book isn’t entirely unique. Everything’s been done before, etc. But, that said, my book in a bit different in that it’s much lighter hearted than a lot of urban fantasy, and the character is an “everywoman” instead of a Kick Ass Heroine. So long term, the issues that are going to test Jane are different issues than you’ll see played out in other UF series.
But short term, my answer to your question is that Jane reaches for her humor when she’s in a tight spot because that’s the only real women she has, yet.
Thanks CeCe! I love the cover too. Do check out the artist’s website, she has some other really cool stuff!
Thanks Qwill! You rock.
Qwill is our pimp.
Hi Lisa: My next book is out July 1, 2010, and the third is due out January of 2011. I totally understand not wanting to wait, but if it helps the first book does NOT end on any sort of cliffhanger.
Synde: Thanks darling! And OMG THE FAERIES!
Kat: WHISKY! WHISKY! WHISKY! Vodka is too tasteless so I drink to much and become a wanton slattern. Instead of my normal attitude of just wanton. Or a slattern.
Qwill: Ahhh, the fascinators! I did discover them overseas. But they’re growing in popularity here. I like to think it’s due to me (but it’s not). I buy almost all of mine on Etsy. Dear, sweet, Etsy.
Rocky: This is awesome! Not too bad at all. I even squeezed in a wee nap.
It’s the cold medicine, people! I swear.
hi Nicole
Just dropped by to say how are ya & congrats once again. You know me on twitter as the pest from Australia who adores your book and is crossing off the days til the next.
I have a question, is your flu thingy gone? lol
I am plugging TR everywhere I go, I have got some people at Charlaine Harris’ forum to buy it & I know they will love it, great bunch of people with awesome taste – obviously. TR is my favourite debut novel of the year. Thankyou.

Hi Nicole. This is Carol, your D*C moderator. It was great to meet and work with you.
Do you have any other convention attendances planned for the coming year?
Deb: Thanks lady! I really appreciate it! I enjoy being pimped, I really do. And I DO feel better although I’m sleeping like CRAZY. It’s ridiculous. But I guess whatever makes you healthy, right? Anyway, thank you so much. I’m so glad you enjoyed the book and keep that pimp hand strong!
Hey Nicole!!! I really enjoyed the vlog…bonus points for the fabulous skull bling.
I was wondering if you can be lured out to Lafayette, IN with the promise of martinis and yummy yummy food!!! I thought about leaving a trail from LA to here, but driving with all that booze in your system, probably a bad idea. So, my honey is a wonderful cook or we have friends that own a great restaurant…so bring on the book tour.
Hi Carol: Lovely to see you here on the shitternet.
And I do have some plans. I’m definitely doing Romantic Times and RomComInc’s RomConvention, in Denver Colorado. There’s more information on my website, under special appearances, for both.
Heather C: Indiana IS a hop skip and a jump from where I grew up, so it’s for sure on the list for my Inevitable Book Tour to Meet All Fifteen of My Fans . . .
In other words, you may have to make it out to the Chicago area for a signing there before I’m sent off on that book tour. LOL
I’m off to Dance and Dinner but I’ll be back later to answer more questions! Yay you guys! Y’ll rock!

I like asking people what they would like to do if there was a time machine – what author would you go visit?
If you could transport yourself into any book – what book would you like to “live in” for the day? Would you change anything about the book?
Great interview! I hope I’m not posting this too late. I will post again with my list. Please excuse any typos!
Hello,
Just wanted you to know that I’d want all those things you want on a desert island! Bought your book today and am reading it now. I’m really enjoying it. I have only heard of the selkie’s in one other book I’ve read. Why did you decide to make the main character a selkie as opposed to other supernaturals? How many books are you planning for this series? Have you ever considered writing YA books? I love to share books with my 14 year-old daughter.

hey nicole, thanks for taking time out of your schedule to answer our questions today. my question is about the time when you first began writing… did you ever have doubts whether or not you could do it, or if you had what it takes to do it? i’ve yet to read your books, but from the excerpt you provided on the vlog above you’re great at what you do, so believe me, this question is more for me and less a reflection on anything i think about your skill or abilities.
Hi Nicole! Congrats on your book release! What do you do for fun when you aren’t writing? Do you prefer your hero in boxers, briefs or commando?

I’m late. I know, I suck. I could not listen to the reading because my copy is on it’s way from Amazon as I type this. Instead, I listened to the first part in one ear, while the New Star Trek was on the television. Really. “Damn it Jim, I’m not a physicist, I’m a doctor!”. I saw it at the theatre too, so I can do both things at once.
I see you like the Dropkick Murphys, which is awesome. I don’t have a question because I’m late and all the good ones have been asked. How about what is your favorite mixed drink?

Hey y’all. I danced, then we went out and I had Caesar salad and a pimiento cheese toastie. Because I wouldn’t want to actually LOSE ANY WEIGHT.
Good lord. Anyway, back to your questions!
And if you commented/questioned and I didn’t respond, I’ve just missed you! Thank you for responding and if I don’t answer a question just poke me with a stick. It’s what my students do.
Hi Libby! I would visit Fredriech Nietzsche BEFORE he got the syphilis and went a bit batshit. I love him and his mustache. As for what book I would visit . . . I think I would visit one of Jasper Fforde’s Thursday Next books as that would be TOTALLY meta, dude.
Beth: I’d always loved the selkie mythology ever since I heard about it in this mythology course I took when I was 16. And I was always especially interested in what happened to the children the selkie maiden would leave behind when she went to the sea. Then, when I needed a heroine who was magical but not kick ass, that popped into my mind as the perfect answer: use one of those children!
Tell their story, finally.
Thanks Kate T! And I think every writer has bouts of self-confidence issues. I sort of freaked out when my book was really published since before that the whole publishing deal had seemed like this hypothetical situation. But I think that I learned a lot about the “process” of letting go of your work doing my Ph.D. I know my book isn’t going to be the best thing ever written, or even the best thing I could write. But I wanted it to be good, and to be something I would want to read. So I worked hard to make it as good as it could be. If you try to write something “perfect,” you’ll never succeed. But that’s okay, because everything is about growing, whether it’s growing as a person, a friend, a lover, or even a writer!
Did I just say “grow as a lover?” *snickers* Moving on . . .
Lady Graeye: Ooo, good questions, I like how you think. First of all, commando first, then those boxer/brief things. Boxers I think are the most absurd underpants EVER, with tightie whities a close second. *shudders* But ideally, a man in a kilt is where it’s at.
And you know that real mean don’t wear panties under their skirts! As for what I do for fun . . . men in kilts, natch.
No, just kidding. I read, travel, cook dance, and drink old man booze.
Brenda: Manhattan, baby! I love a good Manhattan. Puts hair on your chest.
Mario: She’ll be over in 5. Wait for it!
LOL Heather, yes the skull bling does get a little ridonkydonk on occasion.
Woo hoo!! That was epic!
Hello!

And you said you were a professor, what do you teach?
Thank you! I RSVPed!
Hiya Nicole! Many thanks for posting and interacting with us bibliovores
i’ve actually seen your book in our local bookstore and it was tagged under the Horror Genre. I looooooved the book cover! As some of the others have already commented, it was eyecatching!
Just a question: do you read books outside of the genre that you choose to write? What’s your favourite book genre and would you say that you could relate to the latest book you’ve finished reading?
Okay, that’s a lot of questions, sorry
Have a happy day ahead!

Hmm.
Vlogging Nicole? You and Jaye trying to horn in on my schtick. I’m not sure what we’re going to do about this but I have a feeling it’ll involve flaming bags of dog shit on your doorstep.
Also, in case people think I’m JUST an asshole, I did love your book! The pages weren’t nearly as soft as Charmin, but they did the trick! Kudos!
Seriously…nary a chafe.
Aori: I think it’s something you’re born with, but it’s also something you need to/can work at. For example, practicing timing, etc. I’m a pretty social animal, so I get to practice a lot on people. Whether they like it or not.
Cause humor is also VERY subjective. I know a lot of people who don’t think I’m funny. At all. Atttt alllllll. Not like Mark Henry, whom EVERYBODY laughs at! And I teach English literature.
Ruby: I’m an English professor so I read EVERYTHING. The book I read last was Time’s Arrow, by Martin Amis, to teach for my Modernist Fiction course. That and Jeffrey Eugenides’s The Virgin Suicides. They’re very high art books, so not much inspiration for me. Although they’re both beautiful and incredible reads! But yes, I read everything! Thanks for asking.
Mark Henry: It’s because your asshole is basically carbuncular by now, what with all the anal leakage and the warts. So you could be wiping yourself with a Microplane and you’d feel satin!
I apologize for that. Mark brings it out of me!
LOL. You ma’am have earned some points. 2, to be exact. Or 1 and 1/2.
I’m off now to apply salve. Well. I’m not going to do it, I have minions and such. You understand.
oh…I see it’s taken a night time twist..pass the vodka
Mark Henry: Seriously, try the Microplane. Should sand those carbuncles right down.
Synde: You knew it was coming, right?

I can’t watch your video yet because my pet zombie is still wandering around the house and she soaks in random phrases. ANYWAYS, my question is this – since you use a lot of English and Scottish mythological creatures in Tempest Rising, can we be expecting any other supernatural creatures native to that area to be popping up in Tracking the Tempest? Okay, okay, I have another question, too. Are there any other mythological/supernatural creatures that inspire you brewing in your brain for another series? As I have only been able to only scan through most of the questions so if it’s too similar to another question, I’ll apologize with chocolate macaroons.
ewwww god no…I was talking about the expensive kind
Donna: The writers that really inspired my books were the ones I read as a young girl. So a lot of Madeleine L’Engle, Charles De Lint, Mercedes Lackey, and C. S. Lewis. And I don’t know if I wanted to be a writer. I’m finding the whole fact of being a published author very strange. But I had a story to tell, and I told it, and then it sold.
It’s been very surreal for me. I am loving it, and I love when people love Jane. But being an author is still very strange for me.
Kayla: LOL They’re not TOO bad but yeah, you might want to wait till the munchkin goes to bed. As for creatures, there are going to be new creatures in every book! Some are ones you will recognize, others are pretty obscure and REALLY cool. I think my favorite bizarre myth EVER is going to be in book 3. She’s got a bit part, but it’s soooo good.
And I was just eating the peppermint bark from the last gift! Mmmm!

Hey Nicole,
Just thought I would drop by and add a question of my own to the mix (even though I have sat at computers WAY too much today. My eyes hurt!)
I am about halfway through Tempest Rising (It was my Thanksgiving retreat when the family drama got hotter than the dressing).
I have gotten far enough in to see that Selkies are indeed not the only ummmm supernatural creatures to be putting in an appear. So my question is this…. Do you mentally have it mapped out what types of creatures will appear? Are you attempting to stick to one type of mythology? (I think the book already speaks to several). Are there any mythologies you are opting to stay away from as played-out?
Gosh, I guess that is several questions
I have seen authors go both ways. Mignola’s Hellboy universe covers mythological beings far and wide and to some extent so does Charlaine Harris. However, there is one author whose books lost me when ever single character turned out to be supernatural. The final straw was when the daughter of satan showed up
Funny how I can so buy into vampires and werewolves (and even selkies hehe) but throw in a daughter of satan and I am outta there!
Hugs
Scott
Ugh, just noticed someone else beat me to the punch 4 minutes ago with a similar question. Sorry! lol
Scott
Hahahha. Thank you for answering. Okay, I’ll go and practice on others.
Wow. English professor. Do you see any of your students reading paranormal/urban fantasy books? Any of them read yours yet?

And my question is:
Is ‘Tempest Rising’ for young adult readers? It looks so from the cover to me.
Thanks!
Hi Nicole!
I love the cover for Tempest Rising but I agree that it seems to be YA cover, is it? Also, its interesting that you bring Jane into the paranormal world at such an age, how did you select 26? And why a vampire (although it’s most fitting as we’re all in that crazy right now).
Entered the Kindle and daily contest and already a BBB subscriber.
Thanks!
Thanks, Belinda!
And thanks Sarah and Nancy!
Nancy: I’ve always loved the mythology and wanted to know the story for the children left behind in selkie stories. So I wrote it myself.
Hi Scott! The joke behind my world building takes Jung’s ideas of archetypes and twists it. So, Jung was confronted with the fact that all of these various mythologies sprang up from all over, and yet most of them are remarkably similar. Even when they’re from cultures that never interacted. He came up with the idea of archetypes to help answer how this could be. But my joke is that the reason all these creatures exist in our myths and legends is because they’re real. Humans caught glimpses and made up stories (that got stretched and padded as time went on), but underneath those stories are a true being. So everything and anything is up for grabs! But I’d never have Satan show up, as Satan. Satan is a part of Xian mythology, but that horned god is part of ALL mythologies (pretty much). So Satan, himself, is never going to show up. BUT we might one day learn exactly what creature spawned the myth of satan . . .
Aori: I know a few do, and a few of my students have bought my book and brought it in for me to sign it. I think most people are still under the assumption it’s something I’ve self-published, or something. So they’re really surprised they can buy it in a “real” bookstore.
Thanks, REB!
Hi Beverly. It’s very strange being a new author. It’s not something I’d prepared for or something that I’d really thought through. i just wrote a book and decided I’d see if I could publish it. I was as surprised as everyone else when it actually did find a buyer! So the biggest adjustment has been all the work involved in publishing. I thought I would just write books, but you have to do so much more. But I love it, and it’s great! Thanks!
Thanks, Barbara! Hope you enjoy it.
Awesome, Libby! You rock!
Dovile and Biki: Thanks for asking, that’s a good question. The book is definitely NOT Young Adult. It is for mature audiences, whatever that means. I know the book looks different than a lot of other UF, but that’s because the book, itself, is different. If we’d gone with the woman in black leather with a sword, that just would not be Jane. As for the style of art, I can understand from the colors, etc., why people might think it was YA. That said, if you go to the artists’s website (www.sharontancredi.com) or to the websites of artists such as Mark Ryder and Tara McPherson, you’ll see that a lot of new art is heavily inspired by Manga, etc. So that “cartoony” look that we in the West associate with childhood is actually used for all age groups in other cultures. Anyway, the book cover is very different, and it’s been very controversial. But I think after people read the book, they understand it better. Jane’s not a typical UF heroine, and the cover fits her beautifully. Thanks!
And Biki, I made Jane 26 because I didn’t want her to be a girl, anymore, but she couldn’t be too far past the “Great Tragedy” of her life. And if you look at what I’ve said to others about the sort of mythology I chose (and disagreeing with Jung’s archetypes, etc), I HAD to have a vampire.
The reason they’re so popular is that vampires are, literally, one of THE most prominent archetypal myths. EVERY culture has a vampire. That said, my vampires are not the vampires of myths and legends . . . they’re the creatures BEHIND the myths and legends.
And I do quite a bit of parodying of that other type of vampire in my book. Thanks!

Hi there! I haven’t read your books yet but they are in my TBR list.
1st question- What is your least favorite genre?
2nd question- Any weird routines you have to do when writing a book?
Have a great day!
Great Vlog, Nicole.
Congratulations on the release, and I love the cover for Tempest Rising!

and I RSVPed.
Hi Sue! Thanks!
Hope you enjoy it if you read it!
Hi Chris. Cool about the TBR list.
Hope you enjoy it when you get to it. And my least favorite genre . . . Hmmmmm . . . The irony is (considering the spine of my book says Fantasy/Horror) that I can’t read a lot of really horrorey-horror . . . mostly because I’m a complete pansy and will have nightmares for eons afterward. I also don’t like the super sciencey-science fiction. I like a lot of science fiction, but not the stuff that’s allllll about the gadgets and the math and the science. Mostly because I am A MORON at math and science. So it’s not the genre’s fault, at all . . . it’s me.
As for routines, I have none. Just to write as much as I can. But I learned to write fiction through writing in academia, so I see it as a job rather than a tapping of the muse. So I write whenever/wherever. I do try to write first thing, though, when I’m fresh. The day job really sucks the brain cells out of me, so it’s hard to write after work. But that’s more a practicality than a “tradition.”
Thanks, Lisa! I love it too!
Unable to watch vlog until after work but I loved Tempest Rising, so I have high expectations.
I failed to RSVP (I weep) but I’m a BBB subscriber & I posted this interview on Twitter & Facebook.
Nicole, I blame you. I was resisting temptation to buy any books, for myself, before Christmas. But there your book was. And I’d heard so much about it. I was weak, I bought it. Aaaand I read it. And I blew off my BF on Sunday to finish reading it. I blame you for that. It’s a really good book.
What made you decide to make Anyan a barghest (my only exposure to them comes from D&D, not particularly true to the mythos, I’m sure)? Why not a phooka? Or one of the legendary Black Hounds?
Have you seen/read any mythic creature that you just cannot see yourself using (& twisting for your own sick purposes)?
Sewicked: Oooo, good question. Again, Anyan’s being a barghest has to do with the Jungian thing. So, werewolves, phookas, etc, according to Jung, are all based on the same archetype. All of those shapeshifting dog-men are based on some archetypal myth that permeates are antedeluvian brains. In MY world, they’re all based on one “real” creature. So “vampires,” “strigoi,” “nosferatu,” etc., are all based on a group of creatures who call themselves “baobhan sith.” Similarly, all of the werewolfie breeds are based on the group that call themselves barghests. As far the half-wolf/half-man myths, those were probably nahuals having a laugh at our expense.
And there’s really not a lot of stuff I can see being hands off . . . I’m not very good at keeping my hands off of anything, ever.
I’m so glad you enjoyed the book! Thanks for coming to visit me!
I don’t have a question, but I do have a comment. I love the cover of your book. It’s like a cross between tattoo art and cartoon art. I love it. I bought the book mainly because of the cover, so it’s good that the story sounds interesting to me also.
I’m a follower of BBB, a subscriber and have a facebook BBB thing going on also.
I have to find the receipt for the book though
Yay Mardel! Thanks!

Denise: I always had vague notions it would be cool to be a writer, but I never pursued it very actively. I took a creative writing class in HS, then one in college. During the college course I discovered I SUCKED. I wanted to write these very deep, Joycean epiphanic short stories where the girl stared into the a mop and saw the dirty water and was like, “OH NO WE’RE ALL JUST DIRTY MOP WATER!” So yeah, it was Very Bad. So I funneled all my energy into doing my Ph.D., and had seriously, for real, given up on the idea of writing. People would be like, “You should be an author!” and I’d be all, “Yeah, that is NOT going to happen.” I think I thought I had to be the sort of writer (of literature) that I study/teach in order to be any kind of writer. But then I randomly picked up one of Charlaine Harris’s books, and I was like, “Dude, this tone rocks. I could write something with this sort of tone . . .” And the rest, as they say, is history.
Aymee: She IS awesome sauce, and her name is Sharon Tancredi. Her website is http://www.sharontancredi.com.
And thanks for having me!
Wow. That must be nice. You must be proud.
Well how did you start on these legends? Phookas? Barghest? I have never heard any of the terms except strigoi, so I will read it with relish and try to comprehend. So these terms come from what kind of a legend? Did you sprinkle any other culture’s legends?
Thank you, Aori.
Yay Nicole! Tempest Rising was fabulous and I’m looking forward to what comes next. Speaking of which… what’s the most exciting thing that you’re looking forward to in Jane’s adventures (that you can actually tell us about)?

Hi Nicole, my internet connection sucks donkey dongs so I can’t watch the videos. I started reading the other posts and realized that my small mind has had enough stimulation for one day. I’m sorry if I ask you a question that someone else already has, but do you keep a dirty drawer and what is in it? Again your book is awesome and when Jane said twat…I thought to myself “I’ve heard heard her say that before.” This is all so strange to me, but in a good way
Hugs
I picked up your book today and can’t wait to read it.
Hi Nicole,
I, too, am a BBB subscriber, friend on FB, and I posted this event on my FB page. I just wanted to drop in and ask a quick question. I have read your book (Yay for me!), and it was my very first urban fantasy novel. Not knowing what to expect, I jumped in and must say, I liked it very much. I had read one paranormal romance and thought it was funny and entertaining, but your book gave me something more than just a neat little story tied with a bow at the end. TR is full of snarky humor, quick wit, sexy man lust, and irresistable characters that I want to meet. Of course everyone loves (or will love) Jane, but my fave character is Grizzie. My question is, did you have a friend in mind when you came up with Grizzie, or was she strictly out of your imagination–maybe the kind of friend you would like to have?
Aori: I tried to hit on a lot of culture’s legends. My background is mostly with greek/roman/celtic/Norse mythology, but I did as much research as I could.
There are so many amazing myths out there! But most of these are but a google away.
Arlene H: I totally have a dirty drawer. Don’t we all?
But I’m not telling what’s in it! LOL
Thanks, Belinda! Yay!
Well, Dee Dee, I didn’t have someone in mind when I wrote Grizzie, but since then I have met this woman from Arkansas who is VERY SIMILAR. Her name is Cee Cee Schmoutwell and she loves her some Michelob Ultra and Cosmos.
Awwwww…garsh…I just went online ordered another 10,000 copies!
That’s what I like to hear.
