Fun and sexy, with a hateable villain who manages to be sympathetic at the same time, Love Bites is a fun second entry into Sands’ Argeneau Vampire series. I haven’t giggled through a paranormal novel quite so much as through this one for a long time; I really enjoyed Love Bites’s style of humor.
Working the night shift at the morgue, Rachel Garrett had her eye on moving up through the ranks of the coroner’s office and didn’t have many opportunities for much else – her hours killed her social life, and with them, most chances for a boyfriend. On the other hand, she wasn’t exactly scoping out all of the corpses that came in – the handsome one was a rare exception. And, naturally, when the dead man sat up on the examination table, she attributed it to a flu-driven hallucination.
The second time the same corpse was brought in, however, everything changed. Along with the corpse – who again, managed to appear very much alive – came a twisted, homicidal individual who claimed that Rachel’s cadaver-assignment was a vampire. When Rachel was wounded by the would-be killer, the “corpse”, named Etienne, had no choice but to turn her into a vampire as well, and in the process, opened her up to new worlds of pleasure and adventure.
This is a very good series. The chemistry between Etienne and Rachel really zings off of the pages, and the good-guy, “happy” vampires are a fun departure from the usual brooding one comes to expect. What a great read!
